With high hopes, 20 volunteer salmon watchers are now on duty to document coho spawners in lower Fauntleroy Creek. They are taking shifts during the five hours after high tide to locate and count spawners, pinpoint spawning behavior, and note any sea-run trout that come in to scavenge eggs.
Volunteer Mark Sears is also on duty, keeping an eye on drift logs and relocating any that could impede spawner access from the cove to the mouth of the creek.
If/when spawners start coming in, veteran watchers will host a weekend “open creek” for anyone interested in seeing the action. Watch the West Seattle Blog for date/time.
